Google has just unveiled the three new smartphones based on the Android One specification at an event in New Delhi, India. With a retail price around $100 USD, Google has introduced a very attractive and powerful Android device that can trigger massive adoption and sales of Android 4.4+ Kitkat devices. The three new handsets are the Micromax Canvas A1, the Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498, and the Karbonn Sparkle V. The phones are reported to share similar specifications, 4.5-inch 854x480-pixel resolution, quad-core 1.3GHz MediaTek processor, dual-SIM capability, 1GB RAM and 4GB of onboard storage, microSD card slot, and most importantly Bluetooth 4.0.
Android One, a beacon growth magnet!
Android One could be a huge success in 2014 and 2015, and provide a giant leap in Bluetooth 4.0(BLE) adoption. As a result, this drastically increase the total number of devices capable of interacting with BLE Beacons and iBeacons. This changes the game. Up until now, the primary target of Beacon engagements was restricted to mobile users who have high-end devices from Apple, Samsung, Motorola, etc. The high-end market is a very lucrative market for Beacon engagements, however it does not provide true “ global” scale for Beacon technology and Beacon based marketing.
What is key ingredient for Beacon technology adoption?
Audience, Audience, Audience. We are just beginning to see the adoption and rollout of Beacon based experience across the United States and Europe. Android One changes audience potential from just high-end to high-growth markets like India, China, South America, Indonesia, and Africa. Greater audience size enables greater possibilities. Instead of rolling out just to high-end retail, events, and-or hospitality, companies need to think bigger and broader. Android One brings quick-serve, convenience, local transportation, pubs, and small/medium businesses into the mix as possible audience of Beacon interactions.
